The Newark Fire Department responded to 191 Custer Avenue on a reported working house fire. On arrival a 2.5 story frame was well involved in fire with reported entrapment and jumpers in the rear. On arrival heavy fire was venting with an exposure problem on Side D. A second alarm was struck and an aggressive interior attack was underway. During the primary search three victims were located. Two in cardiac arrest and one in respiratory arrest. Rescue workers did their best to save the victims. A 22-year-old man and a 15-year old girl were pronounced dead at the scene. A third victim is in critical condition at SBMC in Livingston,NJ. EMS transported three other victims from the scene. The fire was quickly knocked down and placed under control in within 30 minutes. Newark Arson Squad is investigating the fire.
