The City of Newark,NJ transmitted Box 2236 for a fire reported 2 West Kinney Street corner of Broad Street. Heavy fire was venting from a 5th floor apartment on the departments arrival. Numerous occupants were hanging out from windows and fire escapes. Ladder companies made several rescues as engine companies stretched 2 lines to the 5th floor fire apartment and 2 lines above the fire to the 6th floor. The main body of fire was knocked down quickly but the fire had already extended up the walls to the 6th floor and cockloft. DC Smith struck the 2nd and 3rd Alarms soon after his arrival. As conditions deteriorated on the top floor, the cockloft became well involved with heavy smoke pushing through out on all sides of the structure and with all occupants safely evacuated by the FD at this point, Command gave the order for memebrs to drop down to 4th floor to darken the fire. Then back up again, Newark's Bravest pushed hard with interior lines but the fire extended through out the loft and the Emergency Evacuation was sounded. Master streams and ladder pipes were put into operation. Eight towns responded on Mutual Aid to the fire. The fire was under control in about 2 hours. Companies remained operating through out the night. It has been reported that a female set her boyfriends apartment on fire. The building was gutted by the blaze and it is under under emergency demolition at this time.
