MARCH 10,2009
At apx. 0200 hours Newark FD Dispatch transmitted two boxes simultaneously. The first assignment was dispatched to 100 Chadwick Avenue on a report of Heavy Smoke in a building. The second box was for a smoke condition coming from a vacant building at 537 South 18th Street at 15th Avenue. Some of the companies normally assigned on the 18th Street Box were assigned to the Chadwick Ave location. On arrival of Engine Co.11 heavy fire was showing from a vacant 2 story wood frame. BC1 arrived and transmitted the Signal 11. Interior lines went to work as heavy fire rolled out the 2nd floor. On arrival of DC1 the 2nd Alarm was struck due to fire extending to exposure B another vacant frame and fire threatening Exposure D, and occupied frame. As interior lines worked, there was a partial collapse on Side A covering the front steps and cutting water to 2 hand lines. An evacuation order was given until water supply could be reestablished. The fire was knocked down 20 minutes and placed under control shortly after. EMS staged on scene but no injuries were reported. The was minor extension to Exposure B with minimal exterior damage to the siding on the occupied dwelling on Side D. NFD made a nice stop of the heavy fire and saved both exposure buildings from fire.
