On December 12, 2008 at 1:00pm, the fourth platoon had just completed a mandatory department wide training on the new federal law, that requires high-visibility vests for highway responders.
As the firefighters exited the Fire Department’s training classroom, an alarm was transmitted requesting that Car 2, Engine 2 and Truck 1 respond to a motor vehicle accident with injuries in the area of the Lincoln Avenue overpass on 280 east bound. This stretch of highway goes west from Orange to Pennsylvania and East to New York.
Under the command of Deputy Chief Robert Manganelli, units found a single vehicle accident that lost control and struck the highway divider. The vehicle came to rest north and south on the highway that runs east and west. The driver and her young passenger removed themselves from the vehicle prior to our arrival and required no medical attention.
However, because the position of the vehicle coupled by the fact that it was in the fast lane, Deputy Chief Manganelli ordered the incoming companies to “block right”. This terminology is used to describe how the apparatus should be positioned in order to protect all individuals involved from any possibilities of a secondary accident.
The New Jersey State Police quickly removed the vehicle in order to restore the normal traffic flow. .
